CHICAGO -- A long, odd night turned into a frustrating early morning for a Chicago Cubs team that appears to have lost its swagger.Nick Markakis homered twice, including a tying solo shot in the ninth inning, and Tyler Flowers two-out single in the 11th early Friday morning gave the Atlanta Braves a 4-3 victory.A tough game, catcher Willson Contreras said in a nearly silent clubhouse after Chicagos 13th loss in 18 games.Contreras two-run triple in a three-run eighth inning put the Cubs up 3-2. But closer Hector Rondon blew his fourth save when he gave up the second homer to Markakis to lead off the ninth, Atlantas first hit since the second inning.Flowers then singled to right off Spencer Patton (1-1), and Freddie Freeman, who walked, barely beat Ben Zobrists throw home.Dario Alvarez (3-1) worked a perfect 10th before giving up consecutive singles to Contreras and Jason Heyward to lead off the 11th.Mauricio Cabrera came in and got his second save by getting Addison Russell to ground into a double play before Jeimer Candelario flied to center as the last-place Braves snapped a four-game skid.It was big to get a win, especially against a ball club like that, in ballpark like this, Markakis said. After starting 25-6, the Cubs have gone 27-27. Their three-game skid and losses in seven of eight games have dropped them a game behind San Francisco for the best record in the major leagues. It happens to everybody, Cubs manager Joe Maddon said of his teams woes. For anybody out there who believes it doesnt happen to every team, youre wrong.Tensions boiled after Markakis fourth homer in the ninth. After Rondon struck out Adonis Garcia, Rondon threw an inside fastball to Jeff Francoeur. He and Contreras started jawing, and the benches and bullpens emptied. There was only some pushing and no ejections.I called a fastball in and he didnt appreciate that, Contreras said. After that he started talking to me and I stood in front of him. Before that, Cubs slugger Kris Bryant was twice hit by Lucas Harrell, one on a curveball, and Hunter Cervenka plunked Anthony Rizzo. Bryant didnt return to the field with stiffness in his left leg after his second hit by pitch.Markakis put Atlanta ahead with a two-run homer in the first off Jason Hammel. The right-hander settled down to retire 11 straight before he was lifted with cramping in his thumb on the humid night after a four-pitch walk to Gordon Beckham. Its annoying, said Hammel, who said he had the issue one other time in his career. For a thumb to pull me out of a game, it ticks me off. After Lucas Harrell threw 7 2/3 innings of four-hit ball in his second straight impressive start, the Braves bullpen gave up the lead.Cervenka allowed an RBI single to Zobrist. Then Jim Johnson entered and the rookie Contreras hit a sinking liner to center that got by Ender Inciarte and scored two runs. But the Cubs couldnt bust out of a slump in the makeup of an April 30 rainout that was delayed 1 hour, 35 minutes by rain and included a scary pregame incident.A man was carted off Wrigley Field and hospitalized after he slipped and fell to the warning track while attempting to jump from the bleachers before the game. The Cubs didnt identify the man and didnt provide his condition.TRAINERS ROOMBraves: RHP Julio Teheran, Atlantas lone All-Star, returned to the team after being treated for an infection due to ingrown hair on his right thigh. PITTSBURGH -- Bryan Rust darted in on Tuukka Rask, saw a fluttering puck coming his way and flicked at it. Like just about everything else thats going on with the streaking Pittsburgh Penguins at the moment, it went exactly where Rust wanted it to go.The speedy forwards well-timed swipe sailed over Rasks blocker and into the net 1:24 into overtime Wednesday night to give the Penguins a 4-3 victory and extend their winning streak to seven. The ice wasnt great in overtime, obviously, after playing a whole game, so I was just trying to catch Rask offguard and I was lucky enough to do that, Rust said after picking up his eighth goal of the season. Trying to get it up. It just happened to be kind a little bit lucky. And pretty good too. Conor Sheary, Nick Bonino and Justin Schultz also scored for Pittsburgh. Matt Murray stopped 41 of the 44 shots he faced to improve to 10-0-1 in his last 11 home starts and even picked up an assist for the second time in four games.Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh improved to 20-7-3 to take the overall NHL lead with 43 points after beating Boston for just the second time in their last nine meetings.I thought we certainly found a way to win, Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. It wasnt the cleanest game in the world from our standpoint. Weve been better as of late but I give Boston credit, theyre hard to play against.David Pastrnak picked up his 19th goal for the Bruins. Brad Marchand and David Krejci also scored for Boston. Rask played spectacularly at times and finished with 33 saves, including a breakaway attempt by Sheary with 54 seconds left in regulation that assured the Bruins of at least a point. It was a good point today, Rask said. We played pretty good against a good team. We respect their offense. They have great talent there. Theyre a talented group, especially offensively. We created some chances, but then again, obviously theyre going to get some chances too.The Penguins remained perfect in December (7-0) and have outscored opponents 40-19 during their current run. Yet for all their considerable firepower hhave drawn praise for Sullivan for their play in front of Murray.dddddddddddd. The penalty kill, one of Pittsburghs few weaknesses, killed all four of penalties against the Bruins, including an extended 5-on-3 near the end of the first period. The power play improved to 7 of 14 over the last three games. On Wednesday it was the second line -- not the first one anchored by Sidney Crosby and Malkin -- that came through. Bonino ripped a wrist shot from the slot in the first period to tie it and Sheary made a pretty redirect on a shot by Brian Dumoulin to put Pittsburgh in front. We know we can score in bunches, and we get opportunities throughout the game, Sheary said. So I think we just stick to our game plan. The Bruins, however, have typically found a way to hold the Penguins in check and avoided their first regulation loss to Pittsburgh in more than three years when Pastsrnak pounced on a loose puck behind the Pittsburgh net then ducked around a sprawled Murray and fired it between Boninos legs to knot the game at 3 with 6:40 left in regulation.I didnt think we gave up a whole lot, Marchand said. They did get a couple power-play goals, but 5-on-5, they had a couple shifts where they were buzzing around, but you have to expect that from a team with that much talent. Other than that, though, we did have a good game.Game notes Crosby extended his points streak to nine games. Malkin has at least one point in 13 consecutive home games. ...
