SEATTLE -- In his third start since returning from the disabled list, Jason Vargas felt right at home back on the Safeco Field mound. Vargas (7-5), who spent his past four seasons in Seattle, allowed one run in 6 1-3 innings and struck out five to earn the victory and the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Mariners 5-1 on Saturday night. It was Vargas first win since picking up the decision in an 11-3 victory over the Mariners on June 17. "He had to pitch out of some jams, but when he had to, he got a couple double play balls," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "I thought Jason did a great job. It was great to see him get into the seventh and get to 100 pitches. He maintained his stuff. He pitched and I think thats when hes at his best." The Mariners had multiple runners on base in the second and fourth innings, but came up empty each time as Vargas worked out of trouble. In the fourth, Vargas walked Justin Smoak and Endy Chavez singled to put runners on the corners with no outs, but the Mariners left both runners stranded. "We spread out some hits here and there, but we never really put anything together," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said. "You got to put more heat on them offensively. We didnt put a whole lot of pressure on them tonight. We got to make it more difficult for them than we did tonight." Vargas said he didnt feel much different from his first two starts since returning from the DL, but this time he managed to get the result. "I was just able to make pitches when the time came," Vargas said. The Angels jumped on top early against Mariners starter Erasmo Ramirez (4-1). After a walk to Erick Aybar, Mike Trout hit his 22nd home run to give the Angels a 2-0 lead. Chavez limited the early damage by robbing a would-be home run from Hank Conger in the second inning. Ramirez and Vargas traded scoreless innings until Los Angeles managed to extend the lead in the seventh. Grant Green singled and J.B. Shuck doubled to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Ramirez nearly worked out of the jam as Green was thrown out at the plate on a grounder to second, but Chavez dropped a fly ball that would have ended the inning and allowed Shuck to score to increase the lead to 3-0. Humberto Quintero and Dustin Ackley led off the seventh inning with a pair of singles and Nick Franklin came to the plate to pinch-hit for Brendan Ryan. With a 1-1 count, Franklin tried to call time, but it wasnt granted by plate umpire Ron Kulpa. Vargas appeared to hear Franklins request while checking the runner at second base in his windup and stopped his motion. Kulpa called a balk and allowed both Quintero and Ackley to advance a base. "When I heard it loud like that I just assumed it was the umpire but it wasnt," Vargas said. "Thats all on me. I cant take that for granted." Franklin grounded out to third to score Quintero and put the Mariners on the board for the first time in two nights and chase Vargas from the game. Michael Kohn managed to work out of the jam. Despite hitting Kyle Seager with a pitch, Kohn struck out Brad Miller and Kendrys Morales to hold the Mariners at bay. The Angels added two more runs off reliever Brandon Maurer in the eighth inning. After a single from Mark Trumbo, Kole Calhoun tripled to left-centre field to score a run. Chris Nelson followed with an RBI single to drive home Calhoun and extend the Angels lead to 5-1. As the Winnipeg Blue Bombers opened their main training camp Sunday, Kuale is one of the newcomers brought in to bolster a sagging defence that ranked overall where the Bombers finished 2013, in the CFL cellar with a league high 585 points against.ST. LOUIS - The pass rush was supposed to be a St. Louis Rams strength with four first-rounders on the defensive line running Gregg Williams aggressive scheme. Instead, theyve gotten to the quarterback just once in three games, a sack by rookie Aaron Donald.Eight teams are in double figures when it comes to sacks. St. Louis (1-2) is dead last in the 32-team NFL going into Sundays game at Philadelphia and its the rushing defence thats likely to blame for the lack of sacks. So far, the Rams have surrendered 100-yard games to Cordarrelle Patterson, Bobby Rainey and DeMarco Murray. Teams are running so well, St. Louis has faced the fewest pass attempts in the NFL.Were creating an opportunity for teams to pick up significant gains on the ground, coach Jeff Fisher said. And if anybody had their preference, they do it that way. This week will be another challenge. LeSean McCoy is averaging just 2.7 yards per carry, but Darren Sproles has a 6.7-yard average. The Eagles (3-1) were limited to 22 yards on 12 carries last week in a loss to the 49ers.Can we mimic a few of those things? Williams said. Hopefully. Well see. The difference is what you do in space.Despite the lack of a ground game, Eagles quarterback Nick Foles was sacked just once for a 4-yard loss. Thats the lone sack the Eagles have surrendered the last three games.Even with Chris Long on injured reserve-designated to return with an ankle injury since the opener, it has to be a frusttration.dddddddddddd Robert Quinn led the NFC with a franchise-record 19 sacks last year, and hes been shut down thus far, along with William Hayes, Michael Brockers, Kendall Langford and Eugene Sims.Quinn had a sack in 11 of 16 games last season and had five multi-sack games.Williams has no complaints about effort, just production. Missed tackles and assignments leading to big gains have been critical in the two losses. We had some opportunities this past week. We whiffed and just missed some free rushers and that kind of stuff, Williams said. A few of those plays, you just cant explain why some smart guys like that would do that.Williams said the system hasnt changed much since Fisher became head coach in 2012, so that shouldnt be an issue. The Rams have used a lot a three-man fronts, especially against Dallas, with zero success. This week, they dont seem overly concerned about countering the Eagles up-tempo offence. Were fine with the packages we have, Williams said. If they sub then we have as much time as we want, we can make that decision if we want.NOTES: The Rams could have six wide receivers on Sunday if Tavon Austin (knee) is ready. Austin was limited Friday but did some sprinting. ... CBs Brandon McGee (foot) and Trumaine Johnson (knee) did not practice, along with C Barrett Jones (back).
